It’s not about the money

In deepest Charlton there is a secret club of women who meet with determined fierce energy, once, twice, three, four times a week. It’s to do zumba. Emma and Andrea are packed to capacity and there’s no more room in the Conservative Social hall. But they get by with their muckers on the door and their freebie friend and relative roadies. The think about it that fills my heart each time is their genius stroke – the Warm Down song. ‘It’s not about the money, money, money, we don’t need your money, money, money… we just want to make the world dance, forget about the price tag…’ And I look around and I see fat women, thin women, graceful, clumpy, umpy dumpy and slinky women. Are they rich? Of course they are. But they’ll struggle to put the money in the meter for the ‘lecky. Emma and Andrea, respecting you. x

Wow, what a month autumn is… I’ve been playing the good housewife at home while bottling up supplies for the winter. My young son Samuel helped me pick the green tomatoes and I made a rather horrible green tomato marmalade and palmed a jar off on the neighbour, who swapped me for a home made plum crumble straight out of the freezer! I think I definitely got the better deal there.

However, seriously, harvest is also the time that we gather in our thoughts from the summer, the wind of change blows and we look to winter and the year ahead. The wind of change certainly blew on the 10th anniversary of 9/11, didn’t it. Pretty sickening and chilly and still filled with ash. It’s as if we were all struck dumb for 10 years. It can’t stay this way.

So with that in mind, and with the knowledge that everyone hurts sometimes, I’ve been trying to recover my voice and my old dreams. The most powerful way I’ve found is singing – to my son, in the shower, as I do the housework. My voice feels cracked and old and rusty, but it’s matured since i last properly used it, and I can try low songs, humble and proud songs, all in the same breath. Try it. And get off some old dreams, some faded, not quite done yet dreams and look at them all together. You’ll see your old self in them I promise. x

Testing our resources

Barrage is doing a test shoot tomorrow using the TV studio in Ravensbourne, a bunch of actors, director, camera operators and a vision mixer. We’re keen to try out our new capabilities on a proper production, and will post shots from the shoot up on this site asap.

Barrage Media is now housed in Ravensbourne College, just opposite the O2 centre on North Greenwich Penisula. Ravensbourne is a really exciting place to work, with creative companies and professionals working cheek by jowl with some of the leading digital industry specialists and technologies. We have access to their TV studios, latest HD cameras, editing and effects and full technical support. We also have great links with the academics, and can help you develop your product or research offering.

We’re really excited about our new location and the opportunities it opens up. We hope you will be too. Please do come and visit us!
